DROWNED WORLD / SUBSTITUTE FOR LOVE, 3ème extrait de l’album RAY OF LIGHT, n’est pas sortie aux USA en raison de l’arrivée tardive du 2nd single « Ray of light » sur le marché. Cette chanson sort donc en Europe et au Japon pour faire patienter jusqu’à la sortie du prochain titre prévu (The power of good-bye). Madonna, plus mature avec l’arrivée dans sa vie de Lola, décrit dans cette chanson combien la célébrité peut être un substitut à l’amour mais qu’elle n’est pas le chose la plus importante dans la vie ! Un titre qui séduira l’Europe, atteignant le top 10 dans de nombreux pays comme le Royaume-uni, l’Italie ou l’Espagne.

Walter Stern est choisi pour réaliser la vidéo qui a pour but de montrer « un jour dans la vie de madonna », poursuivie par les paparazzi desquels elle finit par échapper pour retrouver son unique amour, sa fille. Un moment touchant même si cette vidéo a été sans fondement critiquée pour sa ressemblance avec la mort de la Princesse Diana !
