Difficile de rivaliser avec son précédent single VOGUE, mais Madonna sort dans la foulée le 2nd extrait de l’album « I’m Breathless ». Inspiré par le film et la BD Dick Tracy, ces chansons ont un air indéniable des années 30 ! Et « Hanky Panky » permet aussi à madonna une 1ère allusion au thème SM, même si c’est dans un style plutôt ironique ! Cette chanson rythmée et fun, qui ne bénéficia d’aucune promotion ni même d’un clip, ne parviendra pas réellement à sortir de l’ombre même si elle parvient à être certifiée Or et classée 10ème dans les charts américains, mais aussi n°2 au Canada et au Royaume-Uni.
