Cette chanson est initialement issue de la bande originale du film « recherche Susan désespérément ». Elle sort en juillet 1985 et devant le succès du film dans lequel madonna tient le 2nd rôle, elle sera inclus dans la ré-édition européenne de l’album « Like a Virgin ». Madonna ce serait inspirée de la piste de danse pour ce titre tout en observant un beau Portoricain depuis son balcon. D’abord écrite pour son ami Mark Kamins, elle décide plus tard de l’utiliser pour le film même s’il s’agit d’une invitation à danser avec elle (avec des double-sens et sous-entendus sexuels). Pls tard, Madonna confiera avoir l’impression d’être « arriérée » en chantant cette chanson !
Très apprécié par les critiques, ce titre a été désigné comme le « premier grand single de Madonna » et est accompagne d’un clip composé de scènes extraites du film. C’est d’ailleurs un grand succès commercial, « Into the groove » se hissant au sommet des hit-parades de la planète.
