Fort de son succès naissant, Madonna sort ce titre dance et entraînant en novembre 1983. Composé par Reggie Lucas, Madonna collabore avec John Benitez pour améliorer la production. Le succès de cette nouvelle représentante de la vague pop se confirme puisque « Lucky star » détrône « Holiday » dans les différents classements de hits, dont notamment le Billboard Hot 100, et prend la 1ère place du Billboard Hot Cub/Dance ! Si les critiques font l’éloge de cette chanson, Madonna soigne également un peu plus le clip vidéo qui l’accompagne. Peu après sa diffusion, le style et les manières de Madonna deviennent une mode parmi les jeunes filles.
