Coécrite avec Shep Pettibone, cette chanson est sortie en mars 1990 et s’est vendue à plus 8,5 millions d’exemplaires, et reste à ce jour le 3ème plus grand hit de la chanteuse, et certainement LE plus emblématique de sa carrière ! C’est sans aucun doute VOGUE qui l’a consacré reine de la pop ! Cette chanson, incluse dans la tracklist de l’album « I’m Breathless » (inspiré par le film DICK TRACY) trouve son origine dans la danse du même nom caractérisée par des poses hautement stylisées, similaires a des photographies de mode comme on en voit dans le magazine américain Vogue des années 1960. C’est une danse pratiquée dans les clubs gay depuis les années 1930 à Harlem. Dans cette chanson dédiée à l’âge d’or du cinéma, Madonna cite quelques figures emblématiques de cette époque !
Le clip de David Fincher a été considéré comme l’une des meilleures et plus belles vidéos de Madonna, le Rolling Stone magazine le classant même au 28ème rang des meilleurs clips-vidéos de tous les temps. Entièrement filmée en noir et blanc, la vidéo prend des allures d’âge d’or de Hollywood, avec des tableaux Art déco personnels de la chanteuse peints par Tamara de Lempicka, certains gros plans étant d’ailleurs inspirés par les portraits d’actrices comme Marilyn Monroe, Veronica Lake et Marlene Dietrich.
Une fois encore, Madonna est au centre de la controverse. Elle apparaît dans la vidéo vêtue d’une blouse brodée transparente qui dévoile tout de sa poitrine. Malgré la demande de MTV pour censurer la vidéo, Madonna exige le maintien de la scène et l’obtient. Un poster de Madonna dans ce chemisier sera disponible gratuitement avec certains vinyles sortis au Royaume-Uni avec la mention classé X.
