Sorti en avril 2003 comme 2nd single de l’album éponyme après DIE ANOTHER DAY, le titre AMERICAN LIFE critique ouvertement le mode de vie américain et a été controversé en raison du clip dénonçant la présidence Bush et l’invasion des troupes américaines en Irak ! Ce single aura in fine un succès plus mitigé que les précédents. Si la pochette initiale montrait une Madonna armée d’une mitrailleuse, la version finale est rectifiée à la dernière minute pour ne pas renforcer le caractère antimilitariste des propos et ainsi se montrer plus pacifique !
Dans la vidéo originale, Madonna apparaît en sergent-major suivie d’une troupe de légionnaires féminines se rendant à un défilé de mode à bord d’une Mini, pendant ce temps le défilé tourne en lutte armée et une fois sur le plateau, d’où sont diffusés sur des écrans géant, des images propres à la guerre et ses conséquences, elle arrose à l’aide d’un canon à eau les paparazzis et envoie à un sosie du président un grenade dégoupillée. Mais face à la controverse et au boycott qu’elle subi aux USA, Madonna se résigne a sortir une version « grand public » où sont justes présentés des drapeaux et des images de guerre.
